Spread of 1857 The Great Indian Revolt

Awadh (or) Lucknow

  • Resistence in Awadh was prolonged because of the involvement of Talukdars as well as Peasants involvement in the revolt.
  • The revolt in Awadh led by Begam Hazrat Mahal the wife of Nawab Wajid Ali.
  • She declared her son Birjis Qadra as the Nawab of Awadh.
  • Awadh was the nursery of the Bengal Army for a Long time. So the affected sepoys rallied behind Begam.
  • Chief commissioner Sir Lawrence was killed during the revolt.
  • In March 1858 Lucknow recovered by Sir Colin Campbell and Begum escaped to Nepal.

Jhansi

  • Lord Dalhousie had forbid Rani Laxmi Bai’s adopted son to become the Ruler of Jhansi.
  • British annexed Jhansi based on Doctrine of Lapse.
  • Tantia Tope the commander of Nana Sahib joined with Laxmi Bai after the defeat of Kanpur.
  • Huge Rose defeated Tantia Tope and captured Jhans
  • But Rani Laxmi captured Gwalior with the help of Tantia Tope and Scindia the king of Gwalior escaped to Bombay.
  • In the Battle Hugh Rose defeated Ranilaxmi Bai and she died as a hero in the battle.
  • In 1858 Gwalior recovered from the Rebels and in April Tantia Tope captured from the forest and executed.

Barielly

  • Khan Bahadur Khan the descendant of the former ruler of Rohilkhand became the commander of the revolt.
  • He was not happy about the pension being granted by the British.
  • He organised an army of 40000 soldiers and offered stiff resistance to the British.
  • He was defeated and Bareilly captured by Sir Colin Campbell.
  • Khan Bahadur Khan died in the battle.

Bihar

  • In Bihar the revolt was led by Kunwar Singh, the Zamindar of Jagadispur.
  • He was affected by British policy of Land Revenue System.
  • So he joined with sepoy and protest against British.
  • On 27 April, 1858 he died in the Battle at Jagadispur.
  • After his death the revolt led by his brother Amarsingh but soon the revolt controlled by William Tylor.
