  • March 17, 1616 King Christian XIV issued charter to established Danish East Indian Company.
  • 1618 their first expedition to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) was took place under Admiral Ove but they were attacked by Portuguese and escaped to Tanjavur.
  • Thanjavur Nayak impressed by Danish’ words and allows them to established trade Centre.
  • 1620 First Trade Centre in India was established in Tranquebar by Robert Crappe.
  • 1676 factory established in Serampore in Bengal and it became their Headquarters.

Missionary: Barthalomaeus Zieganbalg

  1. Established Printing press at Tranquebar.
  2. He translated New Testament of Bible in Tamil in 1715 was first in any Indian language.
  3. Translated Genesis of Ruth (Bible story book series) in Tamil.
  • They sold Serampore in 1839 and Tranquebar in 1845 to English East India Company.
  • In 1848 they abandoned Andaman and completely left India forever.
