BRITISH ADMINISTRATION IN INDIA – Army and Police

Army:

  • The Army of East Indian Company in India is known as Sepoy Army in European standard and commended by European Officers.
  • This Army helped British to control Non English Europeans and Indian Rulers and also extend its rule all over Indian subcontinent.
  • This Army helped British to control rebellions and other internal disturbances.
  • Indians were appointed in lower Designation and an Indian could reach highest post in the army was Subedar
  • Indians were ill-treated and they paid with low salary but a European soldier with same rank paid more than a subedar.
  • In 1857 around 80% of total Army men in East Indian Company were Indians. After 1857 Revolt number of British troops were increased and the Artillery controlled only by Europeans.

Police:

  • Until 1765 the Indian states followed traditional police system according to their culture and customs.
  • In Bengal region there was watchmen in village who paid by Zamindar, in Town regions Kotwals were acted as the Police and in rural districts there was Faujdars who were acted as the Police
  • After the Battle of Buxar East Indian Company introduced many Police reforms and later it extended to other Provinces.
  • In 1791 Lord Cornwallis established Regular Police Force in Bengal He divided districts in to Dhanas or Police Circle and headed by Darogas.
  • In this system Zamindars relieved from their police duty and Commissioner of Police appointed in Calcutta.
  • The Bengal police system later extended to Madras in 1802.
  • In 1808 District Superintendent of Police was created to control Dhanas under District Collectors. Before the Dhanas were controlled by District judges.
  • Later this system extended to all other parts of British Possessions in India by Lord Hastings.
