National Adult Education Programme (NAEP)
- The NAE programme was launched in 1978 with the aim of providing education and promoting literacy among all illiterate persons, particularly in the age group of 15-35 years.
- Imparting literacy skills to the target illiterate population.
New education policy (1986):
- Programmes funded by Government to provide education to all
- Aim- Provide a common education system all over India. Pursuant to this policy, programmes like Operation Blackboard (1987).
- Mid-Day Meal, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan etc were launched.
Rural Functional Literacy programme (1986)
Obiective
- Develop the ability in the learners to read and write.
- Make aware about the rights and duties of learners.
- Involving NSS and other student volunteers in college and universities in the principle of “Each One Teach One”
- It is a sub-programme of the Adult Education programme
National Literacy Mission (1988)
- Objective – Eradicate illiteracy by imparting functional literacy among non-literate population.
- The mission has three schemes of Total Literacy, Post Literacy and 35 age group. Continuing Education targeting the 15 to Total Literacy Campaign (TLC) 1989.
- Adopted several strategies for favourable public opinion and involving people and creating awareness about development issues affecting

- Literacy volunteers were trained for literacy campaigns.
Post Literacy Campaign (PLC)
- To mobilize the non-literates sensitivity and power to bring about an actual change in the hying and working conditions and thus bring about social transformation.
Jan Shikshan Sansthans (JSS)
- Non formal vocational educational institutions for adults
- By linking literacy with training ISSS seek to improve the quality of life of the beneficiaries.
Right to Education Act
- Article 21 A and the RTE Act came into effect on 1 April
- It implies that every child in the age group of 6 to 14 years Right the elementary education.
- They are entitled for free and compulsory education.
Saakshar Bharat:
- This programme was formulated in 2009 with the objective of achieving So% literacy level at national level.
- It has four broader objectives:
- Imparting functional literacy and numeracy to non-literates.
- Acquiring equivalency to formal educational system:
- Imparting relevant skill development programme; and
- Promote a leaning society by providing opportunities for providing access to continuing education.

Mahila Samakhya
- For women’s education and empowerment
- Initiated in 1989 to translate the goals of the National Policy or Education into a concrete programme for the education and empowerment of women in rural areas, particularly those m socially and economically marginalized groups.
