Economic empowerment schemes for women

  • The IMF estimates that equal participation of women in the workforce will increase India’s GDP by 27 %.
  • Women’s economic empowerment is important to achieve gender equality and sustainable development. Some of the important schemes are,

Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA)

  • Sub scheme of Integrated Rural Development Programme during the year 1982-83
  • To facilitate access for poor women to employment, skill up gradation, training credit and other support services in the rural areas
  • It has been made compulsory that 50%%% of the groups have to be women belonging to SC/ST

Support to Training and Employment Programme for Women (1986)

  • Central Sector Scheme launched by MoWCD.
  • Aims – Provide sustainable employment and income generation for marginalized and asset-less rural and urban poor women across the country.
  • To provide competencies and skills that enable women to become self-employed/entrepreneurs in the age group of 16 years and above 3.

Rashtriya Mahila Kosh (1993)

  • To meet the credit needs of poor women in the informal sector for income generation and household activities.
  • Launched by MoWCD

Siddha(2001)

  • To ensure that Self Help Groups members avail the benefit schemes and services in an integrated and holistic manner for all
  • Awareness regarding women’s status, health, education, sanitation and hygiene, legal rights, economic upliftment and other social, economic and political issues

Mahila Samridhi Yojana

  • Implemented through National Minorities Development & Finance Corporation (NMDFC)
  • To provide Micro Finance to women entrepreneurs of Backward Classes.
  • Skill development training is imparted to group of women in women friendly trades

Mahila e-haat

  • Unique direct online marketing platform leveraging technology for supporting women entrepreneurs/SHGS/ NGOs
  • It is an initiative for women across the country as a part of Digital India’ and ‘Stand Up India’ initiatives.

Stand up India Scheme

  • Launched to promote entrepreneurship among Scheduled Caste/Schedule Tribe and Women for loans in the range of Rs. 10 Lakhs to Rs. 1 crore

Priyadarshini

  • A Self Help Group (SHG) based project for holistic empowerment of women and adolescent girls
  • The beneficiaries will be empowered to address their political, legal, health problems issues through rigorous capacity building.
  • National Mission for Empowerment of Women (NMEW) Initiative of the Government of India for empowering women holistically with a mandate to strengthen inter sectoral convergence

New Swarnima for Women

  • Women belonging to backwards classes living below the poverty line can obtain loans up to Rs.1,00,000/-@ 5% p.a.

Gender Budgeting Scheme

  • Tool for mainstreaming gender perspective at various stages of planning.
  • Budgeting, implementation, impact assessment and revisiting of policy/programme objectives and allocations.
  • Strengthening of institutional mechanisms and training of various stakeholders so as to mainstream gender concerns in Central and State Governments.
  • The Government of India’s MUDRA scheme to support micro and small and direct benefit transfers under the Jan Dhan Yojana seeks to empower women. Women entrepreneurs account for about 78 per cent of the total number of borrowers under MUDRA.
  • Working Women Hostels for ensuring safe accommodation for women working away from their place of residence.
  • Further, the Government is also implementing other schemes like Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, National Rural Livelihood Mission, etc for economic empowerment.
