Swachh Bharat Mission

  • The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Mission, launched on the 2nd of October 2014, is so far the largest programme on sanitation by the Indian Government.
  • It has two sub Missions viz. Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) and Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban).
  • While the rural mission comes under the purview of the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, the urban mission comes under the Ministry of Urban Development.

The Mission has the following components:

  • Construction of Household Toilets,
  • Community and Public Toilets
  • Solid Waste Management,
  • Information, Education & Communication Awareness (IEC)

Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) have the following objectives:

  • Capacity Building and Administrative & Office Expenses (A&OE).
  • Eliminate open defecation,
  • Conversion of insanitary toilets to pour flush toilets,
  • Eradication of manual scavenging,
  • 100% collection and scientific processing/disposal reuse/recycle of Municipal Solid Waste,
  • To bring about a behavioural change in people regarding healthy sanitation practices,
  • Generate awareness among the citizens about sanitation and its linkages with public health.
  • Strengthening of urban local bodies to design, execute and operate systems,
  • To create enabling environment for private sector participation in
  • Capital Expenditure and Operation & Maintenance (O&M) costs.

Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) have the following objectives:

  • To bring improvement in the general quality of life in the rural areas by Promoting cleanliness, hygiene and eliminating open defecation. To motivate communities to adopt sustainable sanitation practices
  • Promote awareness creation and health education.
  • Encourage cost-effective and appropriate technologies
  • Provide ecologically safe and sustainable sanitation..
  • Community managed sanitation systems development.
  • Scientific Solid & Liquid Waste Management systems for overall cleanliness in the rural areas.
  • Create a significant positive impact on gender
  • Promote social inclusion of marginalized communities by improving Sanitation
