Veera Pandya Kattabomman

  • Born: 1760.
  • Father: Jagaveera Pandiyan.
  • Mother: Arumugathammal.
  • Spouse: Jakkammal.
  • Brother: Oomathurai (real name – Kumaraswamy) & Sevathaiah.
  • Place: Panchalankurichi near Ottapidaram.
  • After 1781 & 1792 Carnatic treaties the British got the right to collect revenue from Panchalankurichi
  • Colin Jackson was appointed as the new Collector of Tirunelveli.
  • In 1798 Kattabomman fell into land revenue arrear of 3310 pagodas. Because of the famine, Kattabomman sent a letter to explain his situation.
  • Collector Jackson wanted to send a troop against Kattabomman but Chennai government instructed him to make a talk with Kattabomman.
  • So Kattabomman, his brother Oomathurai and his minister Sivasubramaniyam met Jackson on September 18, 1798.
  • Jackson found only 1080 pagodas were in arrear but he insulted Kattabomman & his minister and also tried to imprison them.
  • Kattabomman and Oomathurai escaped from there but Sivasubramaniyam got arrested. In the conflict some of the people died including British Lieutenant Clarke.
  • Kattabomman sent an explanation of incidents & Jackson’s rude behaviour to Governor Edward Clive.
  • As Clive ordered Kattabomman appeared before the enquiry council in Madras and acquitted from the Crime and British council dismissed Jackson and he replaced by S.R. Lousington.
  • In the meanwhile Marudhu brothers of Sivagangai, Gopal Nayak of Dindigul and Yadul Nayak of Anamalai formed a confederacy against company and Tiruchirapalli proclamation had been made.
  • Due the tactical position of Sivagiripalayam Kattabomman asked the Sivagiripalayar to join the confederacy but the Sivagiripalayakar, the ally of British neglected so Kattabomman moved towards Sivagiri to capture it.
  • Due to this movement British considered it as threat and Lord Wellesley declared war against the confederacy and also moved a troop towards Tirunelveli under Major Banerman.
  • Kattabomman met Marudhu brothers and returned to Panchalankurichi along with 1000 soldiers and he became the head of Eastern bloc of Palayakarars.
  • The company troop along with a troop of Raja of Travancore reached Panchalankurichi on 5, September 1799.
  • After several days of continuous attacks the fort fell down so the troops escaped to Kadalkudi.
  • At the Battle of Kolarpatti, British troops defeated Kattabomman and captured Sivasubramaniyam.
  • Kattabomman captured and handover to British from Kalapur forest by Vijaya Rahunatha Thondaiman, the king of Pudukkottai.
  • Sivasubramaniyam was executed at Nagalapuram on 13 September 1799.
  • Kattabomman was hanged to death at Kayatharu near Tirunelveli on 16 October 1799.
