EXPANSION OF BRITISH POWER IN INDIA – British vs Burmese (1824-1852)

First Anglo Burmese War 1824 – 1826:

Reason: The Burmese tried to capture Assam in 1824 so Lord Amhest declared war.

  • The British defeated the Burmese in 1828 and almost reached the central Burma.
  • So Burma accepted to come in for Peace with British.
  • The war concluded with the Treaty of Yandaboo in 1826.
  • English got Arakkam and Tenasserim, the western region of Burma.

Second Anglo Burmese War 1852:

After the first war British allowed to settle down and carry commercial trade in Burma.

Reason:

  • The commercial disputes prompted new hostilities between British and Burmese.
  • British were ill-treated so they appealed for help to Lord Dalhousie and he sent an army to Burma in 1852.
  • British Won and annexed lower Burma with its capital Pegu.
  • Major Arthur Phayre was appointed as the Commissioner for annexed parts.
  • Burma annexation was very beneficial because they got The Rangoon one of the largest Ports in Asia.
